Smoothies are a healthy and nutrient-rich drink that can serve as a power breakfast or snack option, however, store bought smoothies can sometimes be filled with TONS of sugar. Creating your own smoothies are crucial, but for many, the task seems overwhelming. This step by step guide will help you make the perfect, balanced smoothie.
Step 1: Start with the base of your smoothie. This will be the liquid. The best options are water, coconut water, coconut milk, or unsweetened nut milks such as almond, cashew, and hazelnut.
Step 2: Add your greens or veggies! Smoothies are the easiest way to get in greens without tasting them! Throw in a handful of spinach, collard greens, kale, or frozen cauliflower.
Step 3: Choose your fruit to add some sweetness and flavour. My favourite are berries, bananas, peaches, mangoes, and pineapple. Try freezing them before hand for an extra creamy texture. Try something new by adding in ½ an avocado. This gives your smoothie a creamy texture!
Step 4: Pick your protein. Add a scoop of high-quality protein powder, hemp seeds, or Greek yogurt. When choosing protein powders, look for one that is free of artificial sweeteners or loaded with sugars!
Step 5: Find a healthy fat to manage blood sugar and love up those hormones! The easiest fats to use in a smoothie include coconut oil, unsweetened shredded coconut, chia seeds, flaxseeds, or nut butters!
Step 6: Add a nutrition boost to get in those antioxidants! This one can be optional. Some of my favourite include spirulina, bee pollen, aloe vera, turmeric, cacao powder or matcha!
Step 7: Blend and enjoy!
